Teething, also known as cutting teeth, is a process of emerging new teeth from the gums. Usually, this is a painful process. However, some babies may feel lots of discomfort due to it.

Teething is associated with huge problems and the major symptoms a teething baby has to face are pain, irritability, discomfort and restlessness. They may cry incessantly due to it. Loss of appetite, drooling, swollen gums, sore, chewing fingers and other objects, sucking hurts, rejecting bottle or breast feeding, etc., are the early symptoms of teething. Some babies may also experience fever, diarrhea, tummy troubles, cold, etc. You can help them to decrease the discomfort by giving teething ring for chewing, chilled teething toys made of rubber. Give them cold water and food, which are also good for reducing the discomforts. Mostly, the symptoms disappear by itself. However, if it is severe, consult a doctor immediately. He can recommend you medicines for the teething baby. The medicines include acetaminophen, benzocaine and baby Orajel. To avoid tooth decay, avoid giving milk bottle to them while sleeping.

Teething in Infants – Remedies to Provide Relief

There are lots of medicinal remedies available for curbing the symptoms of teething in infants. It ranges from Oragel tooth sensitizer to ayurvedic and homeopathic remedies. Pain relievers, teething tablets, topical gels, Humphries tablets, etc., are highly effective. Massaging the gums gently with clean fingers is also helpful to reduce discomfort. You can also give them a washcloth for biting. If the child refuses to feed from the bottle, you can either use a nipple in different shape or can give a cup for drinking. Applying ice cubes on the gums is also beneficial for getting relief from the pain. Oral hygiene plays an important role in teething in infants. So there is no need of waiting for the completion of the teething process. You can start the cleaning soon after the appearance of the tooth. Use fluoride toothpaste till the child is three years old.

Teething Age – Varies in Each Child

Though the normal teething age is around three months, it varies in babies. In some babies, teeth may erupt as late as one year. The teeth appear in premature babies at a later stage. However, most of the children get their first tooth at the age of six months and most probably, it appears on the middle of the lower jaw. When the child reaches three years of age, there may be around 20 teeth. Very rarely, some babies are born with a few teeth. If it shakes, it needs to be removed to avoid the risks of swallowing and breastfeeding difficulties. Before the process of teething starts, the child may show some signs such as putting fingers in the mouth, drooling, etc. You can easily understand the teething age of your child by observing them closely and can take precautions to provide them maximum comfort during this period.
