Muscles Pain – A Troublesome Physical Condition

Pain in the muscles, also known as myalgia, is a worrying physical condition often accompanied by inflammation of the body tissues. One of the common causes of muscle pain is over use of the affected muscles. Injuries, strain and stress can also be the contributing factors for myalgia.

Muscles Pain – the Reasons

Physical stress, repetitive motion, bad posture and lack of exercise are the root causes of muscles pain. The other causes of this physical condition are viral infections, metabolic myopathy, deficiency of nutrients and chronic fatigue. Some drugs such as ACE inhibitors, cocaine and statins may also cause pain in the muscles. It may also be due to sprain, fibromyalgia, lupus, polymyositis and rhabdomyolysis. Infections that lead to muscles pain include influenza, malaria, hemorrhagic fever, polio, roundworm, lyme disease, dengue fever and muscle abscess. Autoimmune disorders, metabolic defect and withdrawal effect of drugs and alcohol is also among the causes of myalgia. Pain can also result after a new and intense exercise and any change in its routine.

Muscle Pain Relief – Medicinal Remedies

Muscle pain due to arthritis, fibromyalgia and pain in the spine can be treated by using muscle relaxers like Robaxin, Soma and Skelaxin. Medications like analgesics and NSAIDs are used for getting muscle pain relief. Hydrotherapy is also an effective remedy. Electrical stimulation is useful for chronic pain which is localized. Tension in the muscles reduces with meditation, deep breathing and relaxation. Biofeedback, occupational therapy, hot baths, electric blankets, heating pads, sauna, etc are also effective for alleviating the pain. If it is due to soreness, balms can be used along with heating pads. Oils, creams, muscle relaxants, etc are also effective for muscle pain relief.

Muscle Pain Treatment – Numerous Options

There are many methods to treat muscle pain, which include physical therapy, massage therapy and injections. Spraying a coolant followed by muscle stretching is also effective. Sleeping aids and the use of anti depressants are helpful for some patients. Rest and cold therapy with cold compresses can also be used for muscle pain. Compressing the muscles with elastic bandage and elevation of the injured area by raising it to a higher level are the other methods for pain relief. Muscle pain treatment can be done by non-prescription medicines like ibuprofen and aspirin. When all these options fail to give results, the last resort is surgery, which includes arthrodesis, synovectomy and arthroscopy.
