Spasm Causes, Symptoms and Remedial Measurres

Overstretching and tearing of muscles cause inflammation and muscle spasm in individuals. It may be due to muscle strain and can lead to severe pain, followed by difficulty in movement. An injury can also result in muscle spasms, in which there will be muscle tightness accompanied with pain.

Spasm Causes – the Leading Factors

Spasm in muscles may be due to involuntary contraction of muscles, spine problems and neurological disorders like strokes. Other medical conditions that lead to spasms are multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. Spasm causes include dehydration and deficiency of nutrients, salts and electrolytes, attack of toxins on the nervous system and metabolic disorders. Spasm in the coronary artery is due to contraction of artery wall muscles. Some other causes are poor flexibility, overuse of muscles, and alteration in the neuromuscular control and muscle fatigue. Poor conditioning and starting of a new activity also leads to spasms. Some other spasm causes are physical and emotional stress, nervousness, seizures and nausea along with vomiting. Spasm in bladder can be due to diet, weak muscles, nerve damage, and interstitial cystitis and infections.

Spasm Symptoms – Varies with Illness

Muscle spasms in different parts of the body have different symptoms. Spasms in coronary artery are silent, with no specific symptoms. It may lead to chest pain and heart attack and the spasm symptoms are feeling of constriction and pressure. There may be squeezing accompanied with tightness. There may be loss of consciousness. Symptoms of esophageal spasms are severe pain in the chest, sensation of lump in the throat, dysphagia and contraction of esophagus. The symptoms of colon spasms are abdominal cramps, gas along with bloating. There may be loose stools and mucus in the stools. Hemi facial spasm is painless but there is facial muscle twitching. Muscle contraction occurs in bladder as well. Such spasm symptoms are sudden and severe sensation of urination which occurs without warning. It results in leakage and incontinence.

Spasm Treatment – Remedial Measures

Medicines, alternative treatments along with natural remedies are used for the treatment of spasms. It includes exercise, massage, electrical stimulation and acupuncture. For spasm treatment, antispasmodic medicines are used. Uses of muscle relaxants along with alternative therapy such as massage, stretching and relaxation exercises are very effective. Physical therapy and acupuncture are other methods for treating spasms. Recommended diet for spasm include foods rich in potassium like banana, dry fruits and potato. Calcium rich diet also helps in spasms. However, acidic food should be avoided. Natural remedies can be used for spasm treatment. These include herbal remedies and homeopathy. Healthy diet and rest also play an important role in treatment of spasm.
