The breathtaking natural beauty of Maine and its world-class seafood cuisine are what earned the American state the nickname “vacation land.” Travelers can choose from an array of sandy beaches, entertainment districts and adventure parks in making the most out of their time off.

Maine Attractions – General Overview

The lakes and mountains region of Maine draws outdoor adventurers year-round. Hiking, bicycling and skiing trails are scattered in the city of Naples, while canoeing and kayaking are the primary Maine attractions in Fryeburg. History buffs can also visit the National Historic Register or Thoncrag, the largest private aviary in New England. More nature-tripping opportunities and historical sites can be explored in the region of Kennebec and Moose River Valleys. The Capitol Building and the Maine State Museum in Augusta are rich in valuable antiquities. The Appalachian Trail in the Forks is one of the popular Maine attractions for mountain biking, moose spotting, trekking and hunting.

Maine Beach – Top Resorts

The southern coastline of the state is where most of beach properties reside, along thirty miles of white sand. Seven miles of it belongs to Old Orchard Beach in York County, which includes several Maine beach resorts, bed and breakfasts, and rental properties. Aside from swimming and sunbathing, tourists can visit the old-fashioned Palace Playland amusement park. Another resort town, Ogunquit, owns a beach that was once named the best in the New England region by the New England Cable News. Four Maine beach territories belong to the town of Wells, which also takes pride in its salt marshlands for birds and other wildlife, the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge.

Maine Lobster Festival

Every year thousands of volunteers and tourists come to Maine to celebrate its lobster festival, which has an abundance of eating and cooking competitions, parades and family-oriented contests. The Maine Lobster Festival is held in August and features over 20,000 pounds of lobster consumed in five days of festivities. Kiosks for arts and crafts are also set up, and music bands from different genres grace the stage. The much-awaited Big Parade fills Rockland’s Main Street with spectators of its floats and the elected Sea Goddess, Sea Princesses and Naval escorts. Kids can participate in the lobster eating contest, the diaper derby, costume parade and the cod fish carry relay race.
