Vertical farming, the art of cultivating the plants within the skyscrapers, is one of the economical, environmentally practical methods of farming. There are several methods of farming vertically, and the farmer can choose which ever method is feasible for him.

The main advantage of vertical farm is that the crop production is done throughout the year which eliminates agricultural runoff. This method of farming reduces the utilization of fossil fuels significantly. The area for farming relies more upon the city’s abandoned or unused properties, which eliminate the use of productive space. You also cannot expect any weather related crop failures. The farming method also extends the possibility of sustainability in urban areas. It also converts the black and grey water to drinking grade water by effectively collecting the water for trans-evaporation. The method also acts as a tool for returning the energy to the grid by generating methane gas using inedible parts of crop plants. In addition, it also creates urban employment opportunities. The main advantage of vertical farms is that it returns farmland to nature which indirectly helps in restoring the functions of the ecosystem.

Vertical Growing – All About the Technique

One of the practical ways to maximize the garden space is by vertical growing. It can also be considered one of the best ways to utilize the garden space in the available area. There are many plants that grow efficiently through this technique. Plants like tomatoes, squash, peppers, cucumbers, pole beans, etc, grow effectively in this farming. In vertical growing, plants are not subjected to soil decay. It is calculated that growing the plants vertically produces twice the size of produce when compared to plants grown on the ground in the same area. Cucumbers can be grown in trellis or over a frame structure. You can also purchase stakes of bamboo, decorative rods, or plastic or ceramic framework for supporting the plant growth. Pole beans, gourds, melons, grow by twines and can be easily cultivated in this method. Vertical Hydroponics – Do It Yourself

Fix the plywood, in a vertical position on the wall. Then fix the rockwool slab opposite to the plywood. Fix the eye hooks at a distance of six inches above the slab. Then divide and then attach the vinyl tube into two sections about four inch each and then insert into the hole that are drilled to the left and middle of the slabs. Following this, fix a T fitting on each section and then connect the eight inch tube to the middle of the T fitting and secure the end to the slab. After this fix the eighteen gallon tote underneath the slab and then remove the plastic at the bottom of every slab. The water pump is then connected to the tote through a quarter inch tube. The seedlings can now be added to the plugs placed in the rockwool. You can also remove a three inch piece over the plastic slab for providing spacing for plugs. The nutrient solution can be added to the tote, followed by starting the water pipe to complete vertical hydroponics.
