Frozen shoulder syndrome or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition which is characterized by the stiffening of the shoulder muscles. This syndrome which makes even the performance of day to day activities a tedious task, can be taken care of by timely and proper treatment.

There are various factors which lead to the occurrence of the frozen shoulder syndrome. Of these, a trauma which is experienced on the shoulder is considered to be one of the major reasons. A fracture which results in the immobility of the shoulder joint for a long time, can also lead to this condition. Individuals having a prior medical condition of diabetes are prone to develop this condition. Certain autoimmune disorders and diseases associated with the heart and lung diseases can also lead to this situation. The risk of contracting this condition is also seen to increase with an increase in age. People afflicted with frozen shoulder syndrome will find it extremely difficult to move the muscles in the shoulder region. There will also be pain felt in the upper arm and outer shoulder area. The medications administered usually include non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections. It is only when the above said methods of frozen shoulder treatment fails to be effective, that a surgical intervention is considered. The surgery will usually be performed under anesthesia.

Frozen Shoulder Exercises – Effective

To recover from the condition of a frozen shoulder, it is necessary for one to follow the exercises recommended by a physical therapist in a religious manner. The frozen shoulder exercises will mostly involve pendulum exercises, which help in increasing the range of motion of the joints, along with promoting its lubrication. A simple form of this exercise can be done by hanging the arms at your sides and moving them back and forth and in slow circular motion. Frozen shoulder workouts also involve stretching workouts like behind the back towel stretches and overhead flexion stretches, which helps in improving muscle flexibility. The exercise regime can be completed by practicing simple strengthening workouts using an exercise band.
